Resistance is a funny thing.
It often occurs most when we think about doing the things we love… the things that are the most important to our souls.
Writers resist writing and painters resist painting. There are performers who get sick and throw up before every gig.
But, what sets them apart from everyone else is that they feel the resistance and, instead of letting it stop them…they EMBRACE IT.
Not only because the work they do pays the bills, but because deep down it plays such a vital role in the development of their lives, their happiness and their sense of purpose.
Resistance keeps the majority of us playing small. It convinces us that going after what we know will really make us happy will be too hard, that it’s too far out of reach or too good to be true.
Unfortunately, what we fail to understand is that, as David Presnell says in his book The War of Art,
“Resistance is always lying. Resistance is always full of shit.”
Resistance pushes us in one direction….
It stems from fear and likes to disguise itself as rationalization. This fear-based rationalization is what we use to create a placebo effect in our lives, but what we don’t realize is that this placebo is actually poison.
We let ourselves believe that we are doing the right thing by giving in and following the status quo… that it makes the most sense, or that it’s better for us right now.
We try to blame our resistance on external factors, but that’s just us making excuses for the actions we are choosing not to take. We reach for the booze, the dope, the sex… we self-medicate and isolate ourselves. We continue to go to the same boring job that we hate because it’s EASY and the money makes us think we are happy…or that we might be happy one day when we can retire from the job we have sold our soul to for the past 20+ years and spend it all. Sounds miserable, huh? Familiar, too?
The sad thing is that we do this all to ourselves. Resistance only comes from within. It causes us to self-sabotage by choosing fear over our dreams. It causes us to settle and ignore possibility. Instead of following our heart’s desires we remain unhappy, chasing after things that we know won’t help, in order to try and fix the overwhelming feeling of dis-ease…and that’s when the real disease starts to set in.
Have you ever heard those stories of the people who get diagnosed with an illness that’s supposed to be the end of them, so they quit their job, start doing what they’ve been afraid to do all their lives and then miraculously get better?
Coincidence? Mhmmm, sure.
Resistance kills. Happiness cures.
Resistance manifests itself in many ways, all of them destructive. Think of an avalanche…or the “straw that broke the camel’s back”.
Resistance can cause you to slowly break, or you can embrace it and have a BREAKTHROUGH.
The first step isn’t actually the hardest. It’s making the decision to take the first step that’s the real challenge....because all we are ever really resisting is a thought, and all we are ever really fearing is a feeling. If you’re resisting what you know you need, want or should be doing because you’re “not ready” yet…then you’re kidding yourself. If you’re not ready right now, then you never will be. NOW is all there is. In every moment we have the power to change our lives.
